The need
The crisis Haiti is going through receives little — and often distorted — coverage in France: reduced to a handful of images of violence or disaster, it leaves in the shadows the daily reality of Haitians, their capacity for action and the responses led by the country's civil society. Rigorous, dignified information is the precondition for informed solidarity — from the general public as well as from the Haitian diaspora in France, whose engagement is essential.
Our approach
HASDI defines and steers all of its programmes from France; in Haiti, implementation rests with local partners. Awareness-raising is the one area the organisation carries out directly on French territory, drawing on the field knowledge of its Haitian partners. Our work follows the approach of global citizenship education: explaining the causes of the crises, highlighting Haitian actors, and portraying the people concerned with accuracy and dignity — never as figures of misery.
How we intervene
Our awareness-raising activities take the form of public events, sessions in schools and community organisations, and information content published on this website. Testimonies and images are used only with the informed consent of the people concerned and the validation of our Haitian partners, who remain the first spokespeople for their own reality.
The standards we apply
Our communications are guided by the Code of Conduct for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and NGOs in Disaster Relief (1994), which requires portraying affected people as dignified human beings rather than objects of pity, by the Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS) for transparency and accountability, and by the General Data Protection Regulation for the use of images and testimonies.
